Citroen DS3 DSport Review

Misleadingly, Citroën Australia has claimed the sexy DS3 is ‘anti retro’. The reality is that the DS3 is every bit as retro as the New Beetle and BMW’s MINI Cooper, if not quite up to the extraordinarily nostalgic Chrysler PT Cruiser.

The problem lies in what we understand the term ‘retro’ to mean. It is not only about styling. The MINI and even the Beetle look contemporary enough despite their flamboyant referencing of the past. So does the DS3. But all three brazenly ask us to remember grand moments of the past. Who does Citroen Australia’s marketing department think we are? How can you use the name DS3 and claim to be ‘anti retro’?

The reality is that the DS3’s raison d étre (ditto the DS4 and the coming DS5) is to remind us of Citroën’s heritage and especially the DS that was the unquestioned star of the 1955 Paris Salon and remained the car of the future until somewhere towards the 1980s. Those ‘DS’ initials were a pun on the French for goddess and the car is often referred to as the Diesse.

Fortunately, the car itself is profoundly cleverer than this ‘anti retro’ marketing spin.

A wide range of DS3 variants available in Europe, all the way from an entry level 70 kW 1.4 litre model through to the 149 kW DS3 Racing, neither of which is available locally. Between these extremes come the 88 kW DS3 DStyle and the 115 kW DS3 DSport.

The price of $35,990 is about to be cut.
