Subaru Liberty GT Premium Review

Way back in 1975 Australians got their first chance to buy a sedan-based wagon with some genuine offroad ability. This was the Subaru DL 4WD wagon, which was outwardly similar to the front-wheel drive version.

The application of 4WD technology to vehicles designed primarily as family sedans and wagons became Subaru’s trademark. And the Brumby 4WD ute won the hearts of farmers all over the vast rural landscape.

So there was a certain logic when, in 1998, Subaru Australia decided to stop importing front-wheel drive vehicles and concentrate exclusively on 4 X 4s. ‘All-Wheel Drive is All-We Do’ was a clever catchcry and the company has never looked back since.

Somewhere along the way, Subaru Australia’s marketing people also wanted us to be clear that all-wheel drive in itself (consider an Audi Quattro rally car) did not confer the same offroad abilities as, say, a Land Cruiser. So the 4WD badge was quietly dropped and AWD replaced it.

No-one is likely to try to coax the Subaru Liberty GT Premium far off the road at all. The extra pair of driven wheels are there for extra grip under extreme conditions and should be judged principally as a safety feature.

For those who like to spend part of winter in the snow country, the Liberty GT Premium sedan could be the perfect answer.
