GM ponders a French liaison, and the next Ferrari and Viper are teased

News: General Motors and PSA/Peugeot-Citroën are rumored to be working on a tie-up that would align their European bases in some form. The move could involve their manufacturing footprints and potentially extend to technology.

Views: Both companies are being tight-lipped, so it’s hard to know what the framework of any agreement would be. Still, GM and PSA/Peugeot-Citroën lose money in Europe, so this would be a relationship borne out of necessity.

Manufacturing footprints and finances are only relatively interesting to enthusiasts, but this does have big-time product implications. That’s because the heart of GM Europe is Opel—and all of its engineering prowess. That’s critical, because Buick’s renaissance has largely ridden on Opel chassis, and the premium-driving 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is also Opel-derived.

GM needs to keep that technology center humming and profitable for its European products and the versions that come to America. The cars are excellent, but Opel simply can’t continue to be a money pit. Perhaps sharing resources with the French would somehow remedy that.

It’s worth noting that GM’s alliance record is less than stellar (think Fiat), and the elephant in the room is whether this potential deal could lead to Peugeots being sold in America.

The most likely outcome: The framework of a deal will be roughly sketched out at the Geneva motor show. It won’t be an extensive alliance, rather a technology-and-manufacturing co-op that could benefit each side. Mercedes-Benz and Renault-Nissan have such an agreement, in which each side contributes. And keep it all in perspective: GM and Peugeot’s dalliance isn’t anything close to a merger.
