Army vet chooses Chevrolet Camaro SS for her welcome home gift

As Capt. Shawn Dunn was preparing for her trip home after a three-year tour of duty, a brand-new Chevrolet Camaro SS was being polished and prepped to greet her.

Of course, Dunn was looking forward to reuniting with family and loved ones, but the car was the icing on the cake for this trip home.

Months prior to returning to the United States, Dunn decided to treat herself to the Camaro as her own welcome home gift.

The process of ordering the car began seven months ago when Dunn built her Camaro online from her post in Germany. Part of the online form required a ZIP code, so Dunn entered the Dearborn, Mich., ZIP where she would be returning once her deployment was over. The rest of the order was a performance-car-lover’s dream: A Camaro 2SS with a black exterior, orange and black interior, a 6.2-liter 426-hp V8 engine and a six-speed short-throwmanual transmission.

According to Dunn, sales consultant Dennis Tap from Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn contacted her quickly and was able to make the deal come together.

“The biggest challenge was working around the time difference,” Tap explained. “She would shoot me an e-mail with questions and instructions when it may have been morning where she was but I was still in bed.”

Dunn admits choosing the Camaro was not her first instinct: It was a tough choice for a woman, and a mom, who has led a very disciplined life.

Dunn’s military career began at 18 when she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and trained to become an avionics navigation and communications systems specialist. Following active duty, she headed to Oklahoma City where she attended Rose State College to prepare for veterinary school. Dunn later moved to Oklahoma State University where she earned a doctorate of veterinary medicine.

In 2000, Dunn returned to the military, joining the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. Today, Dunn, who is scheduled to be promoted from captain to major in coming months, is taking time off before taking on her new position as port veterinarian for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Detroit.

“At first, I was planning on getting a new truck, and then I was thinking of my home Up North and thought, ‘No, what I really need is a tractor,’ but once I built that Camaro on the Chevrolet Web site, I just had to have it,” Dunn said.

She said she had always loved muscle cars and finally came to a point in her life and in her career where she decided to enjoy doing something fun for herself.

Meet Capt. Dunn and her furry canine companion Teeny in the video below; we wish them both many miles of happy cruising together in their new Camaro.
