Toyota kills plans for widespread iQ EV sales after misreading demand and battery tech [cardvd-player.net]

2012 was the year to be fully electric version of the Toyota / Scion iQ furore. Instead, it seems that, while technically correct, is that the iQ EV launched this year, a splash much, much lower than previously assumed. According to Reuters, the iQ is a “very limited release.”

This is to say a gentle manner, the iQ 100 EVs, Reuters says that Toyota is now selling in the U.S. and Japan, is a much smaller number than expected. The wall has been written for a while. Has all the way back in 2009, Toyota has indicated that the EV that can go just 50 miles on a charge, can car sharing services are developed, and in 2011, confirmed a spokesman Toyota iQ EV which would be a “low be-volume vehicle “.

Now the line Toyota official (see below) as follows:

Toyota has seen that many customers are not ready to commit to reach, and they do not like the time needed to recharge the batteries. In addition, the infrastructure for charging not become as widespread as originally planned.

So even though Toyota is ready with the iQ EV, we believe that a plug-in hybrid solution offers a better way than pure electric vehicles for most customers’ needs in the short and medium term, and that’s where we focus our commercial activities.

Toyota Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada tells Reuters: “The current possibilities of electric vehicles do not meet the needs of society, it is the distance that can run cars, or the cost, or what it takes to be a long time to load.”

Contrast this with the attitude shown by Daimler, which now has hundreds of electric vehicles that function as intelligent car sharing rides through his program car2go in places like San Diego, California, and Austin, TX. Toyota has pioneered the introduction of the RAV4 EV, and expects to sell around 2,600 of them in the next three years.
